“Books are the quietest and most constant of friends; they are the most accessible and wisest of counselors, and the most patient of teachers.”

Charles W. Eliot

While this is true for many of us, the truth in South Africa is that we have one of the highest illiteracy rates in the world. Unfortunately, within rural education, resources are severely limited, teachers are among the least qualified in the country and they work under the most challenging circumstances. Where children seek friends, counselors and teachers, there is often only poverty to turn to.

This is where Rally to READ comes in. Launched in 1998, Rally To READ is a partnership between like minded corporates contributing to rural education and non-profit organizations. The project has been designed to support the Department of Education by enhancing the quality of language and literacy education in remote, rural schools. In the last 20 years, close to 2000 remote schools have been actively assisted. Yet, there are still a similar number – in rural areas – which have not yet been supported and need the help. This is where Namaqua Wines comes in.

By donating funds, we hope to be able to give back to our greater community. At Namaqua, we care about family, and if we can help and support children to get a proper education there is a much bigger possibility of each child growing up to be a strong, balanced adult with good self-esteem and in return create a balanced, happy family. Our belief is that education creates hope and if we plant a seed of hope in children they will prosper and live their dreams.

We are incredibly proud to be part of this year’s Rally to READ 2018 initiative, and support their vision to make a real difference where needs are greatest.
